Built by a Master Mechanic, Not a Marketing Team.

My name is Nick. I spent 30 years under the hood of cars in Northern New York. I built this site because I got tired of answering the same three questions for three decades.

Why I Built This

I Answered the Same Three Questions for 30 Years

Every shop I ever worked in had the same conversations every single day. A customer would walk in, lean against the counter, and ask one of these three questions:

"When is my inspection due?"
"How much is it going to cost me?"
"What are you actually going to check?"

Across three decades, I probably answered those questions thousands of times. Patiently, usually. Sometimes while my hands were still greasy. The answers were always the same, but the customer was always different. And every customer deserved the answer.

When I retired, I missed the people more than I missed the work. I missed helping someone figure out what they actually needed instead of what they thought they needed. So I built this site. Now those three questions get answered the moment someone asks them, without anyone needing to drive across town to find a counter to lean on.

A Little Background

30 Years on the Lift

I came up the old-fashioned way. Started as a kid sweeping floors and handing wrenches to the guys who knew what they were doing. Earned my master mechanic certification along the way. Spent my entire career in Northern New York, working on everything from logging trucks to first cars to grandmothers' sedans.

Northern NY taught me a lot about what cars actually go through. We get real winters here. Cars rust. Brake lines corrode. Tires wear unevenly because of the roads. An inspection in Northern NY is not the same as an inspection in Manhattan. I've seen the difference firsthand on thousands of cars.

"I've seen cars come in that should never have been driven to the shop. The owner had no idea. That is exactly why we inspect."
Nick C.  |  Master Mechanic

That is the part most drivers never see. The brake pad worn down to the metal. The tie rod with so much play it should not be holding the wheel on. The frame rusted through where you cannot see it from the outside. An inspection is the moment somebody who knows what to look for actually looks.

The Real Reason

Every Car on the Road is Sharing Space with Yours.

Most drivers think of inspections as a hassle. A sticker to get. A box to check. Something the state requires. I get it. I have been a driver too. But that framing misses what an inspection actually does.

An inspection is the one moment in a year when somebody looks at your car the way another driver wishes they could. The person in the car next to you on the Northway, doing 65 miles an hour with their kid in the back seat, has no way to know whether your brakes work. They have to trust that someone, somewhere, checked. That someone is your inspector.

When you skip an inspection, you are not just risking a ticket. You are risking everyone within stopping distance of your front bumper. Most of the bad things I saw in 30 years happened because somebody let an issue slide. A rotted brake line. A worn tire. A frame too far gone to be safe. An annual inspection is how we catch those things before they catch us.

So when you use the calculator on this site to figure out when your sticker is due, remember what you are actually doing. You are taking 30 minutes out of your year to make sure the road is a little safer for everyone on it. That is worth doing.

Keeping It Honest

How I Keep This Site Accurate

NY State updates the inspection rules from time to time. The fees on the VS-77 chart can change. The emissions rules get revised. The checklist gets tweaked. When the DMV changes something, I update this site.

I am one person. I cannot guarantee the site is right to the second. But I do check the DMV's published documents regularly. And if you spot something that does not match what you saw at your last inspection, please tell me.
