A few important things to know about the information on this site before you rely on it.
NYAutoInspection.com helps New York drivers understand the state inspection process. We do our best to keep the information clear, accurate, and easy to read. But there are some important things you should know before you act on what you read here.
This site is run by a private company. We are not part of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. We are not affiliated with the DMV. We are not endorsed by the DMV. We do not work for the state in any way.
NYAutoInspection.com is an independent information site. For official answers, official forms, or anything that requires an actual government response, you need to go straight to the DMV. Their website is at dmv.ny.gov.
The calculator on our homepage uses the published NY DMV fee chart (form VS-77) and the published inspection rules. It is built to be accurate as of the day it was made. But please remember:
Treat the calculator as a smart starting point, not the final word.
New York's inspection rules, fees, and emissions standards can change. The DMV updates these from time to time. We try to update the site when changes happen, but there can be a delay.
If you see a difference between what is on this site and what the DMV says, the DMV is right and we are wrong. Please email us if you spot something out of date.
NYAutoInspection.com gives general information about the inspection process. We do not give legal advice. If you have a specific legal problem (a ticket, a dispute with an inspector, a question about how the law applies to your situation), please talk to a lawyer or contact the DMV directly.
Reading our site is not the same as talking to a lawyer. Nothing on this site creates a lawyer-client relationship.
We explain what gets checked during a NY inspection. We do not diagnose car problems. We do not tell you whether your specific car will pass or fail. For real answers about your vehicle, see a licensed mechanic.
If our site says something general about a part (like "your brakes are checked"), that does not mean we know whether your brakes are in good shape. Only a hands-on inspection can tell you that.
NYAutoInspection.com is a website, not a garage. We do not perform inspections. We cannot inspect your car. We cannot give you a sticker. If you need an inspection, find a DMV-licensed inspection station near you.
We may link to other websites, including the NY DMV. We do not control those sites. We are not responsible for what they say or do. A link from our site is not an endorsement of the other site.
If you find something on the site that looks wrong or out of date, please let us know:
We will look into it and fix it as soon as we can.
This is a helpful information site, not the DMV. Use it to learn and to estimate. For anything official, check with the NY DMV. For anything legal, talk to a lawyer. For anything about your specific car, see a mechanic.
